Artists' reception: Thursday, May 16, 6-9pm

CrossPathCulture NYC presents an exhibition of recent work by New York-based artist Dustin Yellin and South African artist Wayne Barker. The exhibition will be open 12-7, Tuesday through Saturday, from May 15 - June 16 2002 at CrossPathCulture NYC, 135 West 50th Street, Ground Floor. An artists' reception will be held Thursday, May 16th from 6-9pm featuring live musical performances.

Barker is well-known in South Africa’s art world as an ingenious, out-spoken social satirist and as the founder of FIG (The Famous Art Gallery), a gritty avant-garde venue for some of the country’s most impassioned new art. An international curator, he has participated in numerous forums and educational programs in South Africa and around the world. Co-curator Cannon Hersey calls Barker “the urban shaman of the global underground.”

Yellin, a vivacious fixture on New York City’s social circuit, is a coolly enigmatic artist, whose works suggest a scholarly mix of documentation and surrealism. Co-curator James Fuentes says; “Dustin Yellin’s work is like an open wound…at first it burns…then it heals.”

The exhibition will feature appearances by both artists, a private viewing Tuesday, May 14 (rsvp required) followed by a public opening Thursday, May 16, with live performances at both events.

Wayne Barker was born in Pretoria in 1963, obtaining a post-graduate degree in Fine Art from the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Marseilles. Barker’s recent exhibitions include “Kunst is Kinder Speef,” Kunsthalle, Vienna, Austria; “No Logo,” Albert Museum, London, UK; “All Washed Up in Africa,” French Pavilion at the Venice Biennale; and “The World is Flat,” installation, “Trade Roots: History & Geography; Alternating Currents” (curators Okwui Enwezor and Octavio Zaya). His work is in numerous museums and private collections

Dustin Yellin was born in 1975. A self-taught artist, he counts as inspirations for his work numerous figures including Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, and the Dada movement. Recent shows include a solo exhibition at James Fuentes Gallery, New York (2000) and a group exhibition at The Harley-Baldwin Gallery in Aspen, CO (1999). His works are in numerous private collections.
