Sholto Ainslie was born in South Africa in 1963. He is the son of Bill/Fieke Ainslie who founded "Ainslie Studies," later the Johannesburg Art Foundation, the first multiracial school in South Africa. He studied and worked in Design at Parsons School of Design, University of Alberta and in Johannesburg, South Africa. Since 1983 he has made his home in New York. During this time he has worked at the Triangle, Thupelo, Pachipamwe, Tulipamwe, Myrtle Beach and Thapong Workshops, where he was a founding member. Ainslie founded the design department at the Johannesburg Art Foundation, taught for the Dia Foundation, and at present is teaching at the Manhattan Country School. His work is included in the following collections: CBI Bank of Geneva, Switzerland; U.S. Aid, U.S.A.; Bulawayo Museum, Zimbabwe; Johannesburg Art Foundation, South Africa; and the National Gallery, Namibia, to name a few.
