Billy Klüver/Andy Warhol
My Collaboration with Andy
I consider Andy Warhol a great artist. Some say that
his life parallels that of Rembrandt. When I worked
with Andy, he wanted to make clouds. Andy bought as
many books on the subject as he could find. To make
his clouds float, I looked for a material that was
impermeable to helium. The best I could dig up was
something called ScotchPak from 3M that was used by
the U.S. Army to pack sandwiches. The material could
easily be heat-sealed, so that Andy could represent
any cloud formations he wanted.
One day I walked into the studio, and he had simply
folded the material into a pillow shape and sealed it.
Andy's R MDUL "Silver Clouds R MDNM" now occupy a
room in his museum in Pittsburgh. Friends tell me
this is the most popular room with children.
