Francis Hines | Charles Henri Ford | Janet Goldner | Billy Klüver/Andy Warhol
Scientist Billy Klüver was born in Monaco in 1927 and
attended the Royal Institute of Technology and the
University of California at Berkeley. There he
studied--and at the latter institution later
taught--Electrical Engineering. Work with Bell
Telephone Laboratories followed, and Kluver was
awarded eleven scientific patents over the years.
During this period, Kluver also embarked on a number
of artistic projects, both solo and in collaboration.
Artists with whom he worked include Andy Warhol, with
whom he collaborated on the famous “Silver Clouds”
(1965-66), Merce Cunningham, John Cage, Robert
Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns. Many of these works
were done under the auspices of Experiments in Art and
Technology (E.A.T.), which Kluver founded with
Rauschenberg, Fred Waldhauer and Robert Whitman in
1966, and with which he still works. Kluver has also
served as curator/technical supervisor for a number of
major exhibitions/projects. Recently, these have
included the permanent installation of “Silver Clouds”
at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh in 1994, and
the technical design for Rauschenberg’s “Oracle” at
the Centre Georges Pompidou in 1997. Recent
publishing projects include A Day with Picasso (1994)
and Kiki Souvenirs (with Julie Martin, 1998). He is
especially noted for his ability to suggest new
aesthetic directions through developing technologies.
