biopicSculptor/poet Janet Goldner creates works which bring the two forms together, cutting texts into steel sculptures. By doing so, she combines the tactile, spatial forms of sculpture with her elegant, succinct comments on social and emotional issues. Since 1995, when she traveled to Mali on a Fulbright Research Grant, Goldner has been interested in combining images and ideas from Africa and the West. Several major pieces take distinctly Malian forms as their point of genesis, and she co-curated a major exhibition of Malian art by the Groupe Bogolan Kasobane which was presented at Lincoln Center in conjunction with the New York African Film Festival in 1998. Recent exhibitions include shows at the Central Goldfields Regional Arts Complex in Victoria, Australia, and "Statements in Steel" at the Walton Art Center in Fayetteville, AK. Her large-scale sculpture "Most of Us are Immigrants" is in the permanent collection of the Islip Museum, Islip, N.Y. An example of her poetry appears in the poetry section of this issue of PATH.
